This month, Riverside High Performance Group athletes and independent scullers competed at the USRowing Senior Trials, with hopes of winning races and earning their spots on the US National team this summer.
Ultimately, there were two winning crews wearing blue and white stripes: the Senior and U23 Men’s Lightweight Pairs. The U23 Lightweight Men’s pair was comprised of Collin Hay and Matthew Marchiony. They won their final with a time of 6:47.26, just two seconds ahead of second place Greenwich. The Senior Lightweight Men’s pair is a composite crew of Riverside’s Alex Twist, and Seattle Rowing Center’s James Nelson. They won their event with a time of 6:48.75, close to four second ahead of the second place crew.
Other Riverside competitors included Jillian Zieff, who placed third in the Women’s Lightweight 1x, and Danielle Dewitt who also raced in the Women’s Lightweight 1x category. Brigid Bane raced in the U23 Women’s Lightweight 1x. Ben Williams and Amel Younis competed in the Men’s Lightweight 1x. Riverside athlete Liz Martin raced in the Women’s Lightweight pair event as a composite entry. Mitchell Tyson and Alex Brown raced in the Men’s 2x event and finished fourth in the final. Riverside also sent a Men’s Lightweight 4x, with athletes Ashton Knight, Joe Hanna, Mats Terwiesch, and Matthew Battaglia.
