July 2014 – President’s Annual Letter of Appeal
Hello Riverside and Friends,
We’re having a banner year at Riverside Boat Club, and I’m extremely proud of the club’s accomplishments. In the spirit of pride and unity, I’m reaching out to you to support Riverside via the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund supports all of the activities and programs of Riverside, and helps us plan for Riverside’s future.
Jim Hanley once told me that to be an effective President, I need to focus on a simple truth: it all comes down to rowing. When I get bogged down in operational details of the club, I find myself returning to this advice. Day after day, Riverside athletes work strenuously to achieve their rowing goals, whether it’s simply to take the best strokes possible, win local regattas, or go all in for a chance to win medals at the World Championships.

We’ll continue to share inspiring stories via the Riverside Press, but I’d like to share a few highlights. Four Riverside athletes will be representing the United States at the World Championships this year. Andrew Neils, Jake Georgeson, and Peter Schmidt will be rowing in the Lightweight Men’s Quad, and Hillary Saeger will be competing in the Lightweight Women’s Quad. At National Team Trials a couple of weeks ago, their crews put together dominant performances and set the tone to achieve their potential at Worlds. The men’s quad will be accompanied by their coach, Margot Shumway, who has developed these men into international-class athletes. To support Hillary, Andrew, Jake, Peter, and Margot as well as future athletes at the international level, please designate your gift to the Worlds Athletes Fund.
Our development efforts are proceeding steadily and we are in the process of selecting an architecture firm to lead our design efforts. As the design process continues, we will seek feedback and support from all members to develop an effective design, and bring those designs into physical reality. Please consider making a gift to the Facilities Fund to invest in Riverside’s future facility. The membership, committees, and Board are working to create a firm sustainable strategic plan
A principal goal of the Campaign is to achieve 100% participation from RBC members each year. With that in mind, I have a challenge. When we receive 150 new gifts by August 15, I will be diving into the Charles River for a swim. If you want to see me go in, click here and give until it hurts!
Thank you. Thank you for your passion. Thank you for your drive. And thank you for your generosity.
President, Riverside Boat Club
